Cemvision selected for up to €27.5 million EU Innovation Fund grant for low-carbon cement plant in Latvia

The funding will support Cemvision’s first commercial-scale cement plant in Latvia and marks another important step towards industrial-scale production.

Cemvision has been selected by the European Commission for an EU Innovation Fund grant of up to €27.5 million to support the company’s first commercial-scale cement plant in Latvia.

The planned plant is designed to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of near-zero-carbon cement annually. Once operational, Cemvision estimates that it could avoid approximately 3.1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions during its first ten years of operation.

The announcement marks an important milestone in Cemvision’s journey from proven technology and commercial validation to production at industrial scale.

Cemvision produces cement using circular raw materials, including industrial by-products from the steel industry, combined with an electrified production process. According to the company, the technology can reduce emissions by up to 95 percent compared with conventional cement production.

The Latvia project was one of 77 projects selected from 358 applications in the latest Innovation Fund round. Cemvision will now prepare the grant agreement together with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, CINEA.

The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for demonstrating and scaling innovative low-carbon technologies. Financed through revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System, it supports projects based on criteria including emissions reduction potential, innovation, project maturity, scalability and cost efficiency.

Cemvision is a portfolio company of Polar Structure and is led by co-founder and CEO Claes Kollberg. The company is now preparing for the next stage in its transition to commercial production at industrial scale.

The EU funding decision follows several other important milestones for Cemvision, including new commercial agreements and the continued development of its first industrial plant.

For Polar Structure, the announcement represents another important step in Cemvision’s journey towards scaling a technology that can help reduce emissions in one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries.
