Yorkshire Water selects Netmore for major LoRaWAN smart metering project, marking one of Europe’s largest initiatives

Polar Structure subsidiary Netmore will exchange 1.3 million water meters in Yorkshire, enhancing water conservation efforts and solidifying its leadership in advanced metering infrastructure.

Polar Structure’s subsidiary, Netmore Group, has been chosen by Yorkshire Water to lead one of Europe’s largest LoRaWAN water metering projects. The program, subject to final approval by Ofwat in December 2024, involves the exchange of 1.3 million water meters in Yorkshire. This project will further strengthen Netmore’s position as a leader in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and data-driven water resource management.

The five-year contract, which includes data services extending until 2045, is part of Yorkshire Water’s broader Water Resources Management Plan 24 and Price Review 24 strategies. Netmore will oversee the complete delivery, installation, and maintenance of the smart meters, utilizing its LoRaWAN network to provide Yorkshire Water with vital data services. The program is designed to enhance customer service, optimize water usage, and improve efficiency.

This new initiative builds upon the smart meter deployments that began in 2022, when Netmore was awarded an AMI framework by Yorkshire Water to provide LoRaWAN network services for up to 360,000 households.

Ove Anebygd, CEO of Netmore Group, said: “This partnership with Yorkshire Water is a key milestone for Netmore, underscoring our commitment to innovative water management solutions. We are proud to be trusted to lead this program, which will deliver significant benefits for both customers and the environment.”

The new smart metering project supports Yorkshire Water’s long-term goals, including a 50% reduction in water leakage by 2050 and a 15% reduction in non-household water demand. The initiative will provide critical insights into customer water use, enabling better water conservation, more accurate billing, and improved environmental sustainability.

With Netmore’s expanded network coverage and data-driven approach, Yorkshire Water aims to enhance operational efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in water treatment and distribution. Morrison Water Services, Itron, and Diehl Metering have been selected as key partners in this large-scale program, which is expected to begin in South Yorkshire in 2025, pending final approval.
