The Polar Structure Initiative Foundation supports research for a sustainable future
The Polar Structure Initiative Foundation (PSIF) was founded at the end of 2020 with the aim of contributing to the continued development of sustainable infrastructure in Sweden and the world to build together for a better future. The foundation promotes research, education, and innovation within infrastructure based on the UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.
The PSIF has already approved grants for several research projects. Seeing how the foundation can participate and contribute to necessary research that promotes a sustainable transition is gratifying. Below is a summary overview of the projects that have been granted support:
Battery research at KTH – December 2021
Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising technology for stationary renewable energy storage (e.g., solar and wind power) in medium and large-scale stationary installations. Using manganese instead of vanadium is likely to create RFBs that are cheaper and more durable. The foundation finances the measuring equipment needed within the framework of the project.
Ignitia – March 2021
On March 31, 2021, the foundation made its first equity investment in Ignitia AB. Ignitia offers hyper-local, highly accurate weather forecasts for farmers in tropical climates through a 48-hour forecast message delivered daily via SMS directly to the subscriber’s phone. Through increased predictability, including the ability to minimize risks and losses, farmers who use the app get up to 80% higher returns on their farming. In addition, Ignitia has carried out a new issue, and the funds are mainly planned to be used for market expansion to Brazil and Indonesia with the aim of reaching 3.7 million users by 2022 at the latest.
The foundation is looking forward to being able to support more critical research projects that promote a sustainable transition, and further updates will come during the year.
