Battery park in Brista now operational – 25 MW to the Stockholm grid

New battery park in the Stockholm Metropolitan region

Through its subsidiary Polar Energy, Polar Structure has, together with Stockholm Exergi, taken another step toward a more flexible energy system. Since March, a large-scale battery park has been operational in Brista – just north of Stockholm – with a capacity of 25 MW. The facility strengthens the electricity grid in one of Sweden’s fastest-growing regions. Swedbank has provided financing during the operational phase.

This marks the third battery park Polar Energy has brought online in just a few months – a clear sign of how local energy solutions are being rapidly deployed across the country.

– We are very proud of the collaboration that made this possible. Battery parks like this are essential to the energy systems of the future – they provide local flexibility where it’s needed most and help accelerate the transition, says Per Langer, CEO of Polar Energy.

As society becomes increasingly electrified, the demand for capacity is growing rapidly. The battery park in Brista addresses this challenge by delivering a range of services that stabilize the grid at both local and regional levels. It also supports the integration of more intermittent renewable energy sources and reduces vulnerabilities in the electricity supply.

Stockholm Exergi is the leading supplier of district heating and electricity in the Stockholm region.

– We’ve been producing electricity in Stockholm for over a hundred years. But as the share of weather-dependent energy from wind and solar increases, the need to balance fluctuations in the system becomes more urgent. At Stockholm Exergi, we already do this using a variety of technologies, from combined heat and power plants to large-scale heat pumps. Battery parks like the one in Brista give us even more tools to contribute to a resilient energy system, says Erik Forsén, Head of Electricity at Stockholm Exergi.

The facility stores excess energy and supplies power when demand is at its peak. Thanks to the batteries’ speed and capacity, they can be used both for frequency regulation and in long-term capacity markets – ensuring a more reliable and stable power supply.
