New battery park in central Sweden strengthens the local grid

New battery park in Heby strengthens the local grid

Through its subsidiary Polar Energy, Polar Structure is continuing to invest in local energy storage. On 14 May, a new battery park was inaugurated in Heby Municipality, located in central Sweden, just north of Stockholm. The facility marks an important step toward a more flexible and resilient electricity system. The project is led by Sala-Heby Effekt, a joint venture between Polar Energy and Sala-Heby Energi. External financing has been provided by Swedbank.

– Energy storage is rapidly becoming a key component of the future energy system. With the battery park in Heby, we demonstrate how flexibility can strengthen grid stability and pave the way for continued electrification, says Per Åslund, CEO of Sala-Heby Effekt.

The facility is made up of modular lithium-ion batteries and can add or remove power from the grid in just seconds. This helps balance the load during peak demand and maintain grid frequency.

– We are both proud and happy about this initiative. The battery park is a crucial piece of the puzzle for us as a company and for the municipalities to continue growing and electrifying in a sustainable way, says Håkan Carefall, CEO of Sala-Heby Energi.

Local energy storage strengthens both electricity supply and community preparedness – a prerequisite for the continued development of industry, transport, and public services.

– Local solutions are essential for building a sustainable and cost-effective society. This project creates long-term value for the community and enables continued growth and development in our municipalities, says Per Sverkersson, Municipal Commissioner of Heby, who officiated the inauguration.
